I enjoyed two of his literature classes that I took 42 years ago. After all these years, I remember we both cracked up laughing at the image, from Pushkin's "The Duel," of a man calmly spitting cherry pits at the feet of his foe who was about to shoot him.
The rest of the class thought we'd lost our minds. But it was funny.

To Al Ashforth's family.
Bob and I knew Al through our collaboration on his extraordinary books, but you should know how often he spoke of you in such loving and respectful terms.
He was a wonderful man of such heroism and talent.
Sharing through his books ON EDGE and THE RENDITION was a sign of his generosity and these works will continue to inform and entertain.
We are sorry that we cannot attend his Memorial, but we wanted to share our sadness on his passing. He will be missed by us and all the Oceanview Team.

Dear Erika and family,
I'm very sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Albert Ashforth, a colleague and friend.
I'm so very sorry for your loss. He was a great colleague in the Humanities Dept. at the Manhattan School of Music, where he was the Department Chair. He always gave generously of his time, provided insight on teaching, and encouraging words. I remember his sense of humor as well as his calm manner and clarity of expression. Over the years, after we both had left the School, he sent kind notes to me and my husband and also updates on his publications, which I appreciated. I'm sorry not to have written him to thank him for keeping me in mind.
I was awed at reading briefly here about his work in difficult and dangerous wartime locations--demonstrating his bravery and knowledge in many fields.
You are all very fortunate in having had such a gentle, wise husband, father and grandfather with many excellent qualities. It is such a great loss, I'm so sorry.
May you find solace.
With sympathy,
Natalie Hauptman

So sorry that the world has lost Al Ashforth, who helped so many of us in so many ways.
We fellow mystery writers have long known the value of his keen eye on everything from military expertise to grammar, and have benefited from his dedication to writing and helping us write stories that tell important truths along with entertainment. Thanks, Al, for your service to your community, your nation, and your world!

To Erika, Nancy, Claudia, and Elisabeth,
The loss of a spouse, sibling or parent is deep and troubling. Carolyn and I offer our deepest condolences, and we want you to know that we too are deeply troubled and saddened by Al's death.
We received notice too late to be able too attend the funeral services you have planned. I deeply regret this. Al was a very special person, and I will miss him, as I know you will.
With love,
Dick
