I remember the first time I met Eddie. I was very young. He came into the room with a pineapple in his hands. I had never seen one before. I could feel the happy energy he brought with him, as his voice boomed, hello! He sliced the pineapple open and shared it with us and the taste of that wonderfully delicious fruit was a revelation. He wanted to bring us to a street carnival but I think my mom said no as we were leaving soon. The fruit and the idea of the rides and the lights that he wanted to bring us to enjoy stayed with me. Years would pass but I never forgot that and could never see him without a smile. He was always so warm and fun loving, always so generous.. Ghuimba's loving, sweet presence just made them a special couple to me. I hope the memory of Eddie's laughter and big heart is what stays with the family and all who loved him today--not the emptiness of his having gone. I don't think he would want it any other way.. I'm sorry I cannot be with you today but Eddie and my parents know, I am there with you in spirit.. ---Cindy Nieves

There aren't enough words to describe this man, the most wonderful human...happy, generous, full of life, loved and lived for his family, someone you can count on...we have lost a true friend, yes...friend is a big word for me. My husband Albert and I met him through my mom, they were best friends, i could see why she felt that way. He would come to Florida and visit her all the time. She would make him his favorite Italian dish, which was ragu made with baby back ribs sauce, he would always say, "this sauce, nothing like it", eggplant he loved and the list goes on and on. Mel loved food and enjoyed going out and eat at good restaurants. I get teary eye just thinking about the many dinners we shared. When i saw him i felt i was with the presence of mom, he brought back so many wonderful memories. Mel i could write a book and go on and on...we love you and will definitely be missed. I will always be in touch with your beautiful wife Maria. love you Mel. Rose and Albert. Gina and Anthony.
