When I heard she was hospitalized and was wondering how things were going
there was little I could do but wait. I sat on my deck and closed my
eyes in the warm sun and listened to the cicadas and crickets and
birds. I thought about all the vacation trips we had shared to Boston,
to Maine, to Florida. Always this time of year with the same sun and the
same late summer sounds. It was the time of the year when we got away
from it all. My godmother was the voice of joy and happiness
with her deep contralto. She was lovely and fashionable.
She kept the families on an even keel with
her gentle humor. She was my cousin, my godmother, my "Aunt".
I will miss also some of the many loving people she was able to share
her life with and whom we have also lost to this life: her parents,
sister, nephew, husband, and many cousins.
