So sorry to hear about Jimmy’s passing.
Jimmy and I were part of the neighborhood/Mahoney’s crowd from Ave.D.
Mahoney’s was a very unique neighborhood bar.
It was our “Cheers” bar but with more interesting characters.
Sadly, so many of those people who were with Jimmy in Mahoney’s have passed on, Pony man, Pigtown, John Cuneen, Foxy, Dukie, Greg & Patrick Glynn, among others who have left us.
I spent a lot of time with Jimmy in Mahoney’s. His nickname was “Ace”. Not sure why we called him that but many people had nicknames with uncertain beginnings.
We always had a good time at Mahoneys, whether it was watching sports, watching the Honeymooners reruns or just talking and giving insights on the world events or making decisions about our future.
It was always a lot of laughs, so much so that we thought that there was no other place in the world quite like it.
We would play football, handball in Reis Park during the day, and solve the world’s problems at night. As time went on we went our separate ways. I went east to SCPD, Jimmy went with the NYPD.
When I saw the news about Jimmy’s passing. I checked my saved messages on my iPhone.
I had an old, saved message from Jimmy.
We were trying to make plans to meet again one of these summers.
Jimmy was good friend. I have nothing but good memories of a great guy who was great company. Some of the best times I ever had was talking and laughing with Jimmy over a couple of beers. He will be missed.
Until we meet again I hope my old friend rests in peace.
