To Aly, Jon and Stephanie and the rest of Jim’s family we can only imagine the level of your grief. The spiritual injury we sustained in hearing the sad news of Jim demise is yet to be healed. We are consoled by the words of an eminent renowned author William Shakespeare who described our existence on earth as a theater where one comes to play his or her part and bows out at God’s discretion.
He was a bundle of humility, upright in all his dealings, very loving, caring and dedicated person. He lived a noble life and played his part very well. He will remain irreplaceable and unforgettable. He has made his glorious exit. May God grant him and all those who have gone before us in death peacefully repose. May He give your family the fortitude to bear this loss.

Dear Stephanie, Jon, Alyson, Barbara and William, Katherine and Tom, Aunts, Uncles, nephews and nieces, the Chin families, and James' coworkers, neighbors, tenants, and old and new friends:
As we gather here to honor the life of our beloved husband, father, brother, cousin, nephew, coworker, manager, and neighbor, the child of God, James, let us draw strength and comfort from the timeless words of Galatians 5:22-23. This passage speaks of the fruit of the Holy Spirit, qualities that epitomized the essence of who James was.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law."
Galatians 5:22-23 ESV
Praise the LORD and give thanks to the Holy Spirit who saved James and installed on James the fruit of the Spirit with the following qualities!
Love: "And he said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'" Matthew 22:37-39. James' devotion to God and love of his family were clearly evident in every aspect of his life. His unconditional love for his family, friends, and all those he encountered was a testament to his compassionate and generous heart. We all witnessed and experienced the true spirit of Philadelphia, the brotherly LOVE, among James, Barbara and Tom, to the Chin siblings, and the entire Chin families. We felt that love in his warm smiles, his comforting presence, and his willingness to lend a helping hand always.
Joy: "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." James 1:2-4. Even in times of difficulties, suffering and in the hospital bed, he showed us that joy could be found in the bonds we share, the memories we cherish, and the faith he had in Jesus Christ.
Peace: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." John 14:27. Peace was a hallmark of James' character. He carried a calmness that brought solace to those around him. In the midst of life's challenges, he remained a steady and reassuring presence, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, peace could be found through faith and resilience.
Patience: never seen him in a hurry and time was always in James side. Patience was one of James' virtues that we all admired. He approached life with a gentle patience that allowed him to navigate its twists and turns with grace. Whether it was his unwavering support or his ability to listen without judgment, he showed us the importance of taking time and truly understanding one another.
Kindness: Kindness flowed naturally from James' heart. He demonstrated kindness not just in words, but in his daily actions. His genuine concern for others and his willingness to go the extra mile to make someone's day brighter were qualities that left an indelible mark on us all.
Goodness: James' goodness was evident to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His integrity, his unwavering moral compass, and his commitment to doing what was right set an example for us all. He demonstrated that goodness is a choice that we can make in every interaction, leaving a positive impact on those around us. Many treatments of his previous coworkers confirmed his goodness quality.
Faithfulness: James was a man of faith. His devotion to the Creator God and our LORD Jesus Christ, loyalty to his family, friends and coworkers and neighbors, and his beliefs were unwavering. He showed us that standing by those we love and holding true to our values are foundational pillars of a meaningful life.
Gentleness: Gentleness was a quality that endeared James to all generations. His soft-spoken nature and his ability to treat everyone with respect and care were a reflection of his kind soul. He taught us that true strength could be found in treating others with gentleness and empathy.
Self control: And finally, self-control was a virtue that James exemplified. He showed us that while we may not have control over every situation, we can control our reactions and choices. His measured approach to life inspired us to strive for greater self-awareness and restraint.
This was James, and he was truly led by the Holy Spirit.
"But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Certainly James didn't carry these bad attributes. But he beard the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Galatians 5:18-24
"For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments." Psalm 103:11-18
Our LORD has been very generous to James even in his last days. God provided Alyson a job at MSK, and let Jon take the timely off in the last two months, and Stephanie's flexibility on her real estate business, Tom and Barbara' early retirement, and all loving families and friends…
Though James has left us, his fruit of Spirit, one fruit with 9 attributes, and many more good virtues including humility, selfishlessness, helpfulness, caring heart, humor, generosity, honesty, courageousness, skillfulness, and intelligence epitomized the essence of James was, continue to live in us and through us.
May the LORD Jesus Christ receive the spirit of James in paradise, and bless Stephanie, Jon and Alyson and the rest of Chin's family on earth.
AMEN!

We must think of how he lived, not how he died. He supported his family, cared for others, and was a godly man. We will all remember him, for his good deeds he has done to us all, and he’ll be in all our hearts forever.

My Godfather Jim was an amazing individual with such a strong presence. Always fun to talk to and quick with a smile or a joke, he’d always ask me what I had planned next? What new and exciting places would I get to see? He shares a birthday with my dad and my childhood is filled with memories of our big family gathering around them both each year to sing happy birthday and blow out candles. I remember him starting a water balloon fight during my sweet sixteen barbecue and how he got all the adults to be kids with us that day too. We’re going to miss him undoubtedly and profoundly. It is wonderful to see those shining attributes we treasure about him reflected in his children, my cousins Jon and Aly.

In memory of Jim: a legacy of acceptance.
There are people who come into our lives unexpectedly like rays of light and leave and indelible mark in our hearts. Jim was one of those exceptional beings who touched our souls deeply and genuinely. His natural ability to accept people as they were, without judgment or prejudice, made him a beacon of love and understanding.
Jim possessed the rare quality of grasping the essence of each individual, of seeing beyond appearances and connecting directly with the heart; his presence was a balm for the soul and his unwavering empathy inspired all of those who had the privilege of crossing his path.
His life was a shining example of how to celebrate the uniqueness of every human being. He leaves us a legacy of unconditional love and an invaluable life lesson: the importance of opening our minds and hearts to those around us.
Jim will live In our memories, in the shared laughs and in the meaningful, in-depth conversations we had with him, even to his very last breath. While his physical presence has left us, his spirit will endure in every kind gesture and every act of acceptance that we perform.
Today we bid farewell to an extraordinary being who illuminated our world with his kindness and wisdom. As we mourn his departure, we also celebrate the beautiful life he lived to the fullest and the indelible mark he left in our hearts.
Rest in peace, dear friend. Your legacy will endure in our lives.
With loving memories of Jim,
Edwin Gaitán and family

I met Jim in July 2001 while working at Keyspan Energy (National Grid). I will never forget the puzzling look in his eyes when he realized there was a rather strange Engineer confronting his boss.
Many of the technically substantiated proposals (2-3 pages long) turned down by his boss were kept by Jim; I am not certain of the reasons Jim had to hold on to those proposals but I remain grateful he did, as it served well in maintaining a life-long friendship.

Ever since I was little, the Chin family was always there to support us. As with all of the godsons to my mother, he knew the best way to show his affection to us; by teasing us. You could see in the way he treated us that he was paying back all of the adventures and fun that my mother had gifted him over the years. Thank you, Jim, for all of the adventures and love that you had shown us, and especially for playing Santa Claus every Christmas

As I sit here, grappling with the reality that you are no longer with us, I am overwhelmed with a mixture of emotions. The pain of losing you is indescribable, but I am also filled with gratitude for the time we had together and the profound influence you had on my life. Uncle Jim was always there for me, he took time to be there for me even for the smallest things. He was there throughout my middle school and high school journey. During middle school, being the troublemaker I was, I was eventually penalized for my actions. During the meeting with the headmaster and the principal, when my mother and I did not really understand English. Stephanie convinced Uncle Jim to help us with the meeting, he took a day off work to accompany me to the meeting. I ended up avoiding suspension, he has guided me across other challenges through his kindness and wisdom, he was not only a mentor but also a friend. As I bid farewell, I want you to know that you will always have a special place in my heart, and I promise to carry forward the kindness and compassion you showed me.
