Obituary of Jean Lee
Jean Lee, of Neponsit, NY, passed away at age 78 on September 7, 2023. She was born to the late George and Lillie Lee, married to the late Kenneth Lee, and is survived by her loving children, Kristine Marrale, and Douglas (Janis) Lee; and her 5 adoring grandchildren, Isabella, Michael, Justin, Olivia, Jordan, and Spencer.
Jean was born in New York City and grew up in Chinatown on Mott Street. She was the youngest of seven children. In 1969 Jean married Kenny, the love of her life. The two met as teenagers on the beach at Coney Island. They raised their family on Avenue M in Brooklyn, then later moved to Beach 145th in Neponsit. Jean will forever be remembered for her love of family and children. We remember the numerous family parties and summer barbecues at the Rockaway house. Days were spent on the beach and then back to her pool afterwards. There was always with an abundance of food, fun, and laughter. Jean also loved going to Naples, Florida, where her and Kenny had their second home. They loved exploring places like 5th Avenue, Third Street, and Tin City. Another favorite past time was spending summers in Virginia. She brought her mother Young Yew Lee to visit her sister Dorothy and children. Clambakes, slurpies, shopping, feeding the ducks, are just a few memories. She always loved to visit her brother Daniel and sister Lena in New Jersey. A stop off in Chinatown to pick up large red bags filled with dim sum, noodles and rice dishes was mandatory. Family visits were very precious to Jean.
Jean worked in Chinatown at the Law offices of Gim & Wong from 1963 to 2001 doing secretarial work. She would take the D train daily into the city and lug home Chinatown treats like dung tea, sticky rice wrapped in leaves, baby pancakes, or white styrofoam cups filled with hargows. She loved to stop at her favorite store the Rainbow Shop to do a little shopping before coming home.
Jean loved Jesus and prayed often. She kept Jesus Christ the center of her life. She belonged to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Brooklyn. She attended church every Sunday for as long as she was able. She loved her weekly Wednesday lunch bunches and Sunday fellowship. She held her church family close to her heart. She was loved by many and felt blessed to have so many dear friends.
Jean was a faithful believer of Christ, a strong Christian. We will miss Jean, but we rejoice knowing she is now with Jesus and reunited with her husband, Kenny.
