Obituary of Dorothy Patricia Endall
Dorothy Patricia "Grandma DOT" Endall, née Vitale, of Brooklyn, passed away peacefully at home on October 3, 2023.
Dorothy, lover of mystery novels and three-hundred-piece puzzles, was born on May 4, 1941, in Brooklyn, NY. She was the youngest of 5 children born to her parents Nicholas and Mary Vitale. She developed a love for reading while attending Abraham Lincoln High School and, as a stay-at-home mom, she endlessly cared for her family.
Dorothy was a strong woman who lived to make the world a better place for her children, especially her son Eddie who has Autism. Dorothy was known for her warmth, generosity, and love, as well as her exquisite homemade chicken salad. She was renowned for keeping on hand about 13 different teas to choose from at any time. She loved animals, enjoyed many pets over the years and had a special knack for feeding and talking to backyard birds. Dorothy enjoyed spending time watching crime/detective dramas on TV, reading Stephen King novels, feeding and watching birds, as well as being a lover of both dogs and cats.
In 1962 she married a dashing gentleman from Marine Park, William Walter Endall or “Bill”, whom she met on a blind date. Together they raised three children, Douglas, Diane, and Edward and nurtured many cherished pets. Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother, who delighted in making home a happy place for her children.
In the mid 1980’s, Dorothy and Bill moved to New Jersey, where Dorothy enjoyed gardening, treasure hunting at the Flea Markets, and waging war on poison Ivy.
Soon the challenges of rural life prompted Dorothy and Bill to move to Staten Island. There, they could be closer to their children and grandchildren. As a Staten Islander, Dot was notorious for the freshest smelling basement in town, thanks to her diligent laundry practices. She enjoyed bird watching from her back deck and taking walks with her husband and son Eddie.
A true Taurus, Dot had exquisite taste in fashion, owned multiple back scratchers, and used luxurious oils, moisturizes, and soaps every day to keep her skin healthy. Later in life, nothing brought Grandma Dot more joy than ordering gifts for grandchildren and great-grandchildren from her favorite catalogs.
In her final years, Dot moved back to Brooklyn to live with her daughter. There she discovered benefits of pharmaceutical juices from a local juice bar where she regularly ordered the “liver” or “Vampirito” to get her veggies down. She fought a tough battle against multiple ailments, but she was never one to quit her health, always willing to try a new vitamin or exercise.
Dorothy is survived by her Brother Nicholas Vitale (Beth); Brother-in-law Peter Endall; Daughter Diane Endall-Bruno (Peter Bruno); Son Douglas Endall; Son Edward Endall; Grandchildren Ashley, Jennifer, Matthew, Emma, Melanie, Mona; Great-grandchildren Valentina Marie, Violet Amelia, Paul John, Nico, and Lylah Dorothy; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Dorothy was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Endall. Her name Dorothy means “gift of God” - and nothing could be truer. She will be greatly missed.
