Rev. Monsignor John Delendick

Obituary of Rev. Monsignor John E. Delendick

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rev. Monsignor John E. Delendick, the beloved FDNY Catholic Chaplain, who entered into eternal rest on Thursday, November 23 2023, succumbing to pancreatic cancer that he contracted while selflessly serving at Ground Zero during and after the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

Born on September 4, 1949, in Queens, Monsignor Delendick was ordained as a priest on February 12, 1977, at St. Sebastian Church in Woodside. He dedicated his life to the service of others and joined the FDNY as a chaplain on May 15, 1996. Throughout his decades-long career, he served in various churches across Brooklyn, leaving an indelible mark on Fort Greene, East Flatbush, Carroll Gardens, and Sunset Park.

Despite battling cancer, Monsignor Delendick continued to fulfill his duties as a fill-in chaplain, attending funerals and plaque dedications, offering solace to those who mourned. His impact was felt deeply at Department events, from funerals and graduations to promotions and memorials, where he always shared a kind word and a warm smile.

Pope John Paul II recognized Monsignor Delendick's dedication by appointing him "Chaplain to His Holiness" on March 19, 2003, with the esteemed title of Reverend Monsignor, reflecting his elevated status in the papal household.
