Sharon was one of the most welcoming principals in D13. When I was a new principal, she made me feel seen and included. She always encouraged me. She was so positive and had the best smile. I send my deepest condolences to the family. I will miss her.

To the Family of Sharyn Hemphill:
Principal Sharyn Hemphill was a special person who will always be remembered for her kindness and thoughtfulness.
I often thought of her as a mother figure to her students and staff because of the caring way she spoke to and supported them during their journey at P.S. 256.
Although we will all surely miss her, we will always cherish the memories we have of spending time with such a wonderful person that will last a lifetime.
With Heartfelt Condolences

Ms. Hemphill, I am still struggling to find the words to express how your passing has made me feel. Devastated is not even the right word. I wish I had more time to show you my appreciation for how wonderful you were to me. You treated me like I was your own grandson, as I am sure you did for countless others. What a legend you are and will always be in my book! Gone way too soon but will never ever be forgotten! I love you!

Principal Hemphill was what you call a mainstay in District 13, Brooklyn, NY. She was the kind of educator who served multiple generations of children within families. As a fellow principal, I understood, learned from and respected her deep commitment to her community. This is a sad loss to our community. I feel honored to have learned from her.

Ms. Sharyn Hemphill was an amazing school leader. A mentor to those of us that new to the position, she loved her students, her staff and the community she worked for. She was someone I could reach out to and get advice from. May the lord keep her in I will miss my friend.
In your hands, O Lord,
we humbly entrust our sister.
In this life you embraced her with your tender love;

Sharyn Hemphill was a beloved member of the Bedford Stuyvesant, District 13 and NYC DOE communities. She was a smart, compassionate hard worker -- caring for each child that came her way, going above and beyond for each and everyone. Like all principals, Sharyn had many roles. One was librarian, I used to tease her as over the summer, as she prepared for the new year she would sew and repair the school library books to ensure that the books the children returned to in September looked appealing. Her energy and enthusiasm, the joy she brought to everything reminded me of my grandmother. Sharyn always remembered my children's names and asked about them. She was so proud of her family and talked often about her grandchildren.
In 2013 Sharyn was profiled in DNAinfo for "Principal of the Week." I think this article demonstrates her commitment to children and meeting their needs.

I am sorry that I will be unable to pay my respect in person as I will be bringing my youngest son off to college in California. My thoughts and prayers are with Sharyn and the Hemphill Family.
All the best,
Trish Peterson, Colleague, Principal PS 8

Principal Hemphill, like with everyone, always made me feel welcome, whether it was asking me to sit at her table during Principal meetings or in giving a warm greeting with a genuine "how are you?" and interest. A few years back, I received a phone call out of the blue and she asked me for instructional guidance. I was taken by surprise. How could she possibly need advice from me, a rookie? This act meant a lot. A great humble leader is all I can say. May you rest in peace. My prayers are with you and your family. You will be missed.

I will always remember Ms. Hemphill as a heartwarming educator, who loved children and treated each of her students as her own.
I have countless memories of her addressing and sometimes correcting students, in the hallway, office or cafeteria of the school, with compassion and a smile.
May she Sleep in Peace
