Obituary of Sharyn Ann Hemphill
Sharyn Ann Hemphill was born April 1, 1952 in Brooklyn, NY. She was the second of three children born to the late Jesse Lloyd Sr. and the late Catherine Williams Lloyd. She was married to the late Charles Hemphill Jr. and had two children. Sharyn was very ambitious and hard working. She worked at the U.S. Postal Service while obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree and then her Master’s Degree's at Hunter College and Bank Street College of Education, respectively. She first started her career in education at Bethany Baptist Elementary school in Brooklyn, NY. She enjoyed teaching and helping the youth of the Bedford Stuyvesant community, since this was where she grew up. Sharyn embarked upon a 40 year career with the New York City Department of Education. She worked in many schools before settling her roots down in Benjamin Banneker Elementary School. There Sharyn was the Title 1 Math Staff Developer, then Assistant Principal, and finally Principal. During her 16 years as principal at Benjamin Banneker Elementary, Sharyn worked hard and diligent to get the schools test scores up and keep them up. She was able to get a brand new state of the art science lab. Before retiring, Sharyn secure the Magnet program grant for the school. Now P.S. 256 is the Benjamin Banneker Magnet School of Architecture and Engineering. She was a force to be reckoned with and everyone knew it throughout the Board of Ed. During her years as a teacher, Sharyn was able to obtain a residence in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. She loved her Penn Estates community. Neighbors would often see her working in the yard or taking her walks around the neighborhood.
Forever In Our Hearts
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May Ms. Hemphill’s soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Visitation will be Friday, August 11 from 2:00 – 7:00 PM at Marine Park Funeral Home, Inc., 3024 Quentin Road, Brooklyn, NY.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 12 at Our Lady Help Of Christians R.C. Church, 1315 East 28th Street, Brooklyn, NY.
